Playing Browser Driving Games on a Chromebook: What Works and What to Change

Published · 1 min read

2D games run everywhere

Car Rush, Drift Boss, Retro Highway and Doodle Race draw with a 2D canvas and run at full speed on any Chromebook made in the last few years. If you have a slow machine, these are the ones to play first.

3D games need WebGL

Games like Moto X3M, Crazy Cars and Smash Karts use WebGL. They still work on most Chromebooks but drop frames when the browser is doing other things. Close other tabs — especially video — before pressing Play.

Two settings that help

Use the fullscreen button under the game: rendering a smaller page around the game costs frames. If a game offers a quality or graphics option in its own menu, turn it down one notch; on a small screen the difference is invisible and the frame rate improves.

Keyboard, not trackpad

Every driving game here supports the arrow keys. A trackpad works for menus but is the wrong tool for steering. If a game insists on the mouse, plug one in or play it on a phone instead.

When a game will not load

Car Rush is hosted on this site and we can fix it directly. The others are embedded builds; if one shows a blank frame, reload the page once, and if it still fails tell us through the contact page which game and which browser.
