Car Rush on a Chromebook, Phone or Tablet: Controls and Saving

Keyboard controls

On a laptop, desktop or Chromebook, Car Rush uses the four arrow keys only:

• Up accelerates. Hold it down. The car slows on its own when you let go.
• Down brakes.
• Left and Right steer. Steering only works while the car is moving.

The game does not read WASD or the space bar. The help screen before the first track says the same: up to accelerate, down to brake. The keys only work during a race. In the menus, click or tap the buttons.

Touch controls

On a phone or tablet, four arrow buttons appear on the race screen. Left and right sit at the bottom left, and accelerate and brake at the bottom right. Hold a button the way you would hold a key. The first track's help screen tells mobile players to use the buttons to move the car.

The game chooses between keyboard and touch mode by checking the browser's identity string for phone and tablet names when it loads. ChromeOS is not on that list. A Chromebook with a touchscreen, even folded into tablet mode, gets keyboard mode, and the on-screen buttons do not appear. Play it with the keyboard on a Chromebook.

Screen size

The game is drawn at 1600 by 960 pixels, a wide landscape frame, and scaled to fit the space it has. The build's own fullscreen button is switched off, so use the fullscreen control on this page's player for a bigger picture. On a phone, turning the device sideways makes better use of the screen.

A small speaker button at the top of the race screen turns the sound on or off, and the exit button next to it goes back to the menu.

Where progress is saved

Your best time on each track and your total score are saved in your browser's local storage, on the device you played on. Nothing goes to an account, and there is no sign-in.

• A different browser or a different computer starts from World 1, track 1 again.
• Clearing site data for carrush.org deletes your progress.
• A private or incognito window may not keep anything. The game's own warning names Safari Private Browsing as the usual cause.

Once you have a saved time, the main menu also shows a delete button for your save. It asks you to confirm first, because it removes every best time and locks the worlds again.

If it runs slowly

Car Rush draws its road in 2D on a canvas, so it asks little of the graphics chip. If it stutters on an older Chromebook, close other tabs, especially video, before you start a track. The race clock counts real time, so slow frames cost you seconds on the track.
